Winter Percussion (WP) is an after-school program that begins in the late fall following Marching Band and continues through early spring. The program is open to all MVHS students and is an "indoor marching band" without brass and wind instruments and color guard. It consists of two parts--1) a marching drum line (battery) of snares, toms, quards, bass drums, and cymbals; and 2) front ensemble (pit). Different from Marching Band, competitions are held indoors in a high school gym using a large floor mat that typically is painted to match the band's musical theme. Winter Percussion combines music performance, marching, and dramatic movement to create a performance that lasts approximately 5 minutes. Bands compete at different levels, divisions, and circuits and are judged on criteria that changes every season, but is based primarily on technology and creativity. For a complete overview of Winter Percussion, click on the FAQS link.
The Winter Percussion program is funded 100% from parent donations and some student fundraising. Donations cover coaching fees, music, uniforms, instrument purchase and repair, transportation, and competition entry fees. Suggested parent donation amounts are based on how much it actually costs to operate the WP program each year.
For the 2015-16 school year, we request $300 from each family to sustain our program.
Weekly email bulletins provide information on upcoming competitions, practices, etc. If you're not receiving these regular bulletins, email to be added to the distribution list. LIKE our Keynoters FaceBook page to get news FAST! Great way to stay in the loop, get calendar reminders of WP events, and see great photos and videos!
Parent support is an integral part of Winter Percussion and because our band is a small group of students we depend on the help of each of our families. Watch for regular emails requests for how you can help, such as:
Drive equipment truck
Load and unload equipment truck
Drive students to and from competitions & chaperone
Help move instruments at competition
Assist in uniform fitting
Note that the SRVUSD requires all parents be registered in order to volunteer. Click here for more information.
