Winter Percussion (WP) is an after-school program that begins in the late fall following Marching Band and continues through early spring. The program is open to all MVHS students and is an "indoor marching band" without brass and wind instruments and color guard. It consists of two parts--1) a marching drum line (battery) of snares, toms, quards, bass drums, and cymbals; and 2) front ensemble (pit). Different from Marching Band, competitions are held indoors in a high school gym using a large floor mat that typically is painted to match the band's musical theme. Winter Percussion combines music performance, marching, and dramatic movement to create a performance that lasts approximately 5 minutes. Bands compete at different levels, divisions, and circuits and are judged on criteria that changes every season, but is based primarily on technology and creativity.
